Wreck of the 'North Bend'.
This sailing ship ran onto Peacock spit (Near the Columbia river
bar) on 1-12-28. Following this grounding she 'walked' herself
across the spit and into deep water in 13 months, with very little
damage to her hull. Several years later she was converted into
a lumber barge and was a total loss when she broke away from her tow
and struck 'Guano' rock on the Coos Bay bar. This picture is
how she looked just prior to being burned for scrap in 1942. |
