From the Collection
of the Coos Historical & Maritime Museum
In
1999 a fire raised a building above The Hollering Place. A wonderful
view of the bay could now be seen by anyone driving west through Empire.
A group of citizens with interest in
preserving the view and revitalizing the Empire area of Coos Bay
encouraged the city to purchase the property. The city purchased the
property and now owns not only the view property, but also the property
below the bluff, the lower property being known as The Hollering Place.
The loose knit
group continued to work with the city to develop The Hollering Place.
The group also works on other projects to improve the Empire area.
The group successfully lobbied for design standards for new and remodeled
buildings on Newmark street to establish consistency in the historical
area of Empire. In 2004, the citizens officially formed a non-profit group
called 'The Concerned Citizens of Empire' and has a 501(c)(3) tax
status. The goals of the group
are:
-
Preserve the view
of the bay at The Hollering Place
-
Preserve the history
through interpretive displays
-
Improve the beach
access at The Hollering Place and adjacent land
-
Revitalize Downtown Empire
